Creating a garden around a home or place of work can offer both the designer and the end-user an important opportunity to settle a building in its surroundings so that daily activities can flow more easily between the man-made world and the natural environment. The benefits include a more diverse source of venues for work or play, a restful sense of connection to the earth and a healing place for communicating with neighbours and the outside world.
I have loved growing plants since a child and have always worked as a gardener, producing flowers, vegetables and especially herbs for use around the home, in cooking and in healing remedies.
As an architect with a special interest in the greening for mental health movement, my approach to landscape design seeks to offer my clients not only a place for growing food but also a sanctuary from the stresses of the outside world, an arena for play and a dwelling place for the spirit. I have designed for both large estates and small gardens and favouring a plant-based solution to what I perceive as over-engineered 'outside spaces'. I am particularly interested in companion planting and the natural-cultivation style of Fukuoka.
